Greenmarkets

PIJACE OR GREENMARKETS

Belgrade is one of the few cities in Europe with operating greenmarkets where you can buy fresh local products daily all year round. The city has more than 30 greenmarkets providing local and seasonal vegetables and fruits as well as dairy products.

The Pijaca opens officially from sunrise to sunset, but you shouldn’t go very late because the best products tend to be sold during the morning. Kalenic, Bajloni, Zeleni Venac and Zemun greenmarkets are the busiest and most well known ones.

ZELENI VENAC PIJACA

Located in the nosiest square in the heart of the city, only 5 minutes away from Republic Square and next to a major public transportation hub, Zeleni Venac is one of the oldest greenmarkets in Belgrade. During the 18th century, the area was part of the belt around the Kalemegdan fortress and became very popular for the daily transit of people and proximity to main city areas. A decade ago it was reconstructed to bring back the original look.

Beside all the seasonal fruits and vegetables, you can also buy delicious artisan cheeses and meat in the butcher shops around.

KALENIĆ PIJACA

Situated in Vračar, one of the central municipalities of Belgrade, Kalenić Pijaca is the largest and most extensive greenmarket in Belgrade with more than 800 stands. The market exists since 1920’s and was named after Vlajko Kalenić, Belgrade’s 19th and 20th century businessman who left most of his property for public use, including the Kalenić area.

The market stands in t]{style="font-weight: 400;"}[he triangular square between Maksima Gorkog and Njegoseva streets, surrounded by bakeries and florists.

Kalenić has the widest selection of fish and seafood available in Belgrade. You can also find here one of the flea markets in Belgrade.

  • Parking: Zone 1

BAJLONI PIJACA

Placed in the oldest part of the city, just a few steps away from bohemian street Skadarlija, Bajloni was named after the Czech-originating Bajloni family. Villagers from all around Serbia sell fruit and vegetables here but there are also sellers of “exotic” fruits such as avocados, mangoes and coconuts.

There are a few butcher shops in the market where you can buy barbecued meat, few bakeries and traditional small shops selling fresh dairy products like kajmak or goat cheese.

  • Working Hours: 06:00 – 19:00 h
  • Parking: Zone 1

ZEMUN PIJACA

Set in the Great Square in the middle of Zemun, this greenmarket is the first mobile market in the region following its reconstruction in 2012. The area is a multifunctional place for both trade and public performances. With about 500 mobile stands, Zemun market is among the biggest markets in Belgrade.

Good quality fresh fish and seafood can be found during the year because of the proximity to the Danube River and because Zemun was originally a fishing village.

  • Working Hours: 06:00 – 19:00 h

You can find more information for the rest of the greenmarkets in the Belgrade Pijace webpage.
