HISTORY

The history of Serbia is a heritage from all the different cultures that lived in this land during centuries. Starting with Celts in the 7th and 8th century, the Romans taking over in the late 9th century or the Ottomans ruling during 400 years. Our history is rich and diverse.

RELIGION

[After many years of turbulent history, Serbia inherited a diverse religious structure. ][Most people in Serbia are Orthodox Christians (84.98%), followed by Roman Catholics (5.48%), Muslims (3.2%) and Jews (1.08%). The rest of religions present account for a small minority.]

ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY

[There are 46 Orthodox churches and 3 monasteries in Belgrade. Among the most important ones are St. Michael’s Cathedral, the St. Sava Church and St. Mark’s Church.]

[St. Michael’s Cathedral is commonly known among the city residents as Saborna Crkva. It’s located in the center of Belgrade, at the intersection of Kralja Petra and Kneza Sime Markovića streets.]

[St. Sava Church is one of the biggest Orthodox churches in the world situated in the top of the hill in Vračar neighbourhood. The temple can be seen from several places around the city giving an impressive view. ]

[St. Mark’s Church][ is located in the vicinity of *Palilula*, in *Tašmajadan* park is one of the biggest in the country and has a Serbo-Byzantine style totally different than the rest ones. ]

CATHOLICISM: [There are 6 Catholic churches in Belgrade, the oldest one being co-cathedral of Christ the ][*King* in *Krunska 23*.]

ISLAM: [Centuries ago, Belgrade had more than 200 mosques, but nowadays only the Bajrakli Mosque, in ][*Gospodar Jevremova 11*, remains as and active example of Islamic religious architecture in the city.]

JUDAISM: Sukkat Shalom Synagogue is currently the only fully

active Jewish temple in Belgrade.
